CHAPTER EIGHT

It was late the next afternoon before the water receded enough for Ava to go after her car. After a lot of convincing, she finally agreed to let Chase to ride down the hill with her on Rufus. He was still behind her, but this time, he let her steer the gentle horse down the winding driveway.

“Are you sure it’s alright for him to walk on the driveway?” she asked.

“He doesn’t have shoes on, and we’re not running. It won’t hurt him, and it’s not slick like the grass is. He is a little stir-crazy, but he is cautious.”

“Stir-crazy? This is Rufus being rowdy?”

She laughed and patted the huge horse’s neck.

“He is part draft horse, and they are known for their laidback demeanor. For Rufus, this is animated.”

They talked the entire way to the car, which was much longer at a walk than it had been in the mad dash to outrun the storm. Chase’s hands had settled on her waist, and she couldn’t help the butterflies that were fluttering in her stomach. She was walking away from this man to save his life, but telling him why she was leaving would mean admitting to her part in everything that had happened over the last twenty years. Ava laughed, the sound bubbling up and out of her before she could stop it.

“He is such a character.”

“He really is. He is my favorite horse, but don’t tell him that. He’ll get a big head.”

Ava laughed again; she couldn’t help it. She was going to miss this, but it was time for her to get back to reality.

Chase started to walk her across the country road, but Ava stopped him.

“Thank you, for everything,” she said. “I don’t need you to walk me to the car.”

“I know you don’t,” he said, though he didn’t stop. “My mechanic got it to start this morning, so it should be fine.”

“Good to know. Really, I don’t need help.”

She was already across the street, and he was there, walking beside her. He walked around the car then shook his head.

“What?” she asked.

“Flat tire,” he said, opening the passenger door and reaching in to push the button that popped the trunk. “I’ll change it really quick and you’ll be on your way,” he said, walking around to the trunk before Ava could stop him.

He stopped when he saw the contents of her trunk, and Ava groaned inwardly. Maybe he wouldn’t think anything of what he could see. It was boots and a backpack after all.

But her wish
